Winter Dog Walking Tips Every Owner Should Know

As the temperatures drop and the days become shorter, it can be tempting to skip your daily walk and stay curled up indoors (or in other terms - we hibernate, haha!) While there is nothing wrong with the occasional cosy day at home, regular excercise and mental stimulation in winter is just important - not only for your dog, but for you too!
With a few simple adjustments, winter walks can still be safe, enjoyable, and something both you and your dog look forward to.
Here are a few tips to keep the blood moving through you both:
1. Walk During the Warmest Part of the Day
During winter, early mornings and evenings are often the coldest times (plus our usual early morning wake up times are now dark!)
If your schedule allows, try planning your walks around midday or early afternoon when temperatures are warmer and visibility is better.
This can be especially helpful for:
- Puppies
- Senior dogs
- Smaller breeds
- Short-coated breeds
A slightly warmer walk can make the experience much more enjoyable for your pup!
2. Don't Let a Little Rain Stop the Adventure
Not every winter day will be sunny, but that doesn't mean your dog needs to miss out on exercise. The cooler weather can bring new things to smell, feel and maybe taste ;)
Just remember to:
- Dry your dog thoroughly afterwards
- Pay extra attention to paws and between the toes
- Wash off any mud or debris
Sometimes the best adventures happen when the weather isn't perfect.
3. Stay Visible During Darker Mornings and Evenings
Whether you are walking before work or after dinner, visibility becomes increasingly important!
To improve safety:
- Wear light or reflective clothing
- Stick to well-lit paths
- Keep your dog close when near roads and crossings
- Use bright, easily visible walking gear (like this Kibbles Co. Orange Hi-Vis No-Pull Harness)
Being seen is just as important as seeing!
4. Watch for Signs Your Dog is Feeling Cold
Not all dogs handle winter weather the same way.
Some signs you should look out for are:
- Shivering
- Slowing down
- Lifting paws repeatedly
- Seeking shelter
- Reluctance to continue walking
If you notice these signs, it may be time to shorten the walk and head home for a walm cuddle on their comfy orthopedic bed!
Enjoy Every Season Together
Winter may look a little different, but it's still full of opportunities for adventure. Whether it is a quick walk around the block or a muddy trail through the park, spending time together remains one of the best gifts you can give your dog!
With the right, preparation, quality walking gear, and a little flexibility, winter can become one of the most enjoyable seasons for both you and your pup!
At Kibbles Co., we're passionate about helping dogs and their owners enjoy every adventure... no matter the season!
